I have been offering personalised mountaineering instruction, climbing and guiding services from Fort William since 1999. Many of the testimonials below have been kindly supplied by Alan Kimber whose company West Coast Mountain Guides has reliably introduced me to clients looking to extend their horizons to confidently explore mountains in the UK and abroad.
During public holidays and other busy times I need to refer enquiries to other mountaineering instructors and guides who are based locally. All feel passionate about these hills and greater ranges, and have long experience in sharing this with others. Some might inspire you more than others but all are excellent coaches and companions. Regardless of how their background differs from your own, all our staff have proved themselves sensitive to your needs and are utterly dependable if conditions deteriorate.
All West Highland Guides hold Professional Liability Insurance against negligence to £5,000,000 and may hold any of the following qualifications: MIC, IFMGA or WML appropriate to the itinerary. All group equipment will be supplied and /or inspected by your instructor before use. I will do my best to post their details below so you know who you may be sharing a rope with.

“I just wanted to say thanks again for great weekend on the Isle of Skye. I came home with a great sense of achievement and will remember the isle of skye for some of the best views and climbing I have ever done. Thanks for your patience and excellent guiding through out the two days, the weekend far surpassed my expectations. Looking forward to the Scottish winter already. I will send you on some of the photo’s taken at weekend tomorrow.
Thanks Again, Pat”
Now I’m back behind my desk in London, I just want to thank you very much indeed for looking after me so well at the weekend on the hills… The coaching and guiding you gave me over the two days were ideal for someone at my level, as well as enabling me to reach my first summit by a technical climb. I must admit that one or two of the moves were rather more daunting than what I was expecting. When I saw you lead off on them I assumed that you were just showing me the sort of thing that experts can do, before inviting me up by an easier route. Discovering that I had to follow suit was intimidating at first, but having managed to do so I am very appreciative of the guide’s skill in judging a client’s ability, and in helping him progress beyond his previous limits. Thank you also for the protection when I had a bit of a slide near the top – only a few feet through the elasticity of the rope, but in its own way another valuable first experience! All in all it was a great weekend for me, from which I have grown both in knowledge and in confidence, and I look forward very much to returning as soon as I can find space in my rather hectic schedule ahead. I’ll be back in touch before long when I’ve made some headway with the pictures and films. Best wishes Colin”
“Hi Alan. We had a great time out on Ledge Route. Will you thank Spike for his hard work. We will definitely be up for something next time we are up in Scotland. Any recommendations of a similar grade 2 will be appreciated. Regards, William Jerram”
“We had a great day out with Spike, he kept us moving, was very calm and informative and we always felt safe thoughout the pitches and climbs and we can’t thank him enough. Standing on the ledge at Glovers with my Brother was totally breathtaking. Honestly, one of the best days of my life. Tower Ridge – ticked off !!!!”
“Tom and I just wanted to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed our weekend climbing with West Coast Mountain Guides and we certainly look forward to climbing with you and your guides again. We were very impressed with Spike. His relaxed yet instructional approach quickly put us at ease and gave us the confidence in our ability to climb some classic winter routes. Being new to climbing in crampons and using ice axes he certainly challenged my abilities and gave me an appreciation for winter climbing, for which I am very thankful. In my dash to get back to Glasgow for the flight home we also ended up with a couple of Spike’s climbing book which Tom will send to you in the next couple of days. Again thank you for our weekends climbing and please pass our thanks to Spike directly.
Best regards, Tom & Jonathan.”
“Spike was fantastic. I would recommend him to anyone! The traverse beat us, but we will be back! Probably in May 2011.
“Thank you very much for arrangements you organised for the day out on Ben Nevis with Spike yesterday. My son, Will, and I had a great day. He learnt and experienced a lot and we both enjoyed Spike’s company. It might not be often that a 12 year old gets the chance to do the Ledge route so I attach a couple of photos just in case you wanted to use them.
Kind regards George”
“Dear Alan, Thanks for running the summer mountaineering course. It was great to spend a week with someone as passionate and enthusiastic as Spike. I was a bit concerned I wouldn’t have the stamina for 5 days walking and I did start to struggle on the last day, when we did the Aonach Eagach ridge. It was a brutal climb up from the Clachaig Hotel but the walk down was easier on the knees. The highlight for me was crossing Tower Gap thankfully the wind wasn’t blowing. Please pass my thanks on to Spike and David it was a great week.
Kind Regards Paul”
“Had a fantastic day with Spike on Tower Ridge this year – best day of my hols! Spike is so good to be out with- I love the chat.I never dreamed I’d be able to do Tower Ridge, but having gone out with Spike before, I trust him completely and I know he wouldn’t take me on a route that was far beyond me. Now I have to look for a challenge for next time and I hope I can have Spike as my guide again – I will be older and slower next time!!!We’ve just arrived back home and I’m still reliving that day – thanks again, Noelle”
“We managed to catch up with Spike on our way home thank you, we had an amazing time. Unfortunately we were lacking a few views but there is always next time. Spike was an absolutely fantastic guide. He was great company, always encouraging and positive, he knew when to push us and when to say stop. There wasn’t a single moment when I didn’t feel safe with him in charge. What more can you ask for in a mountain guide? I hope you have a great time in the Alps. Thank you once again. No doubt we will be in touch for the second attempt at some point. Jen”
“Hi spike. Just wanted to say thank you for the instruction and detailed information. Your knowledge and tips were fantastic …. Now back to reality. Regards Brian”
